What is the Low Carb Diet?

A low carb diet is one that significantly limits carbohydrate intake. The diet is designed to jump-start the body's metabolism into burning excess metabolic fat for fuel.There are many versions of the low carb diet and can be quite confusing to people who wish to try this method.    From Atkins, Sugar Buster,  South Beach, to various iterations of the Paleo, they all have some elimination of carbohydrates as their core principle.  How do you know if a low carbohydrate diet is right for you? What is the Paleo Diet?

The Paleo diet at first glance may seem to be a simple diet plan that is based on eating the kinds of foods that the early humans ate. That being said, there are innumerable versions of the Paleo diet.  It eliminates processed foods and sugars except fruit and honey as a basic principle. In general, the Paleo diet all meats, fish, nuts, some vegetables and some fruit and does have some things in common with a low carb diet.

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

The Mediterranean diet is modeled after the diet of people in Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Italy, and northern Africa. This diet is notable for its high vegetable and fruit consumption. Healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, and avocado are also an integral part of this diet plan. The Mediterranean diet also includes lower intake of animal meats. Research shows that the traditional Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of heart disease and lowers the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol — considered the "bad" cholesterol that builds up in your arteries.

What is the Swedish Diet?

The Swedish diet is similar to the other low carb diet plans mentioned previously. The focus with the Swedish diet is on starch, carbohydrate intake and high fat intake. Common staple foods in this diet include lean meats, egg whites, blueberries, oats, yogurt, and vegetables. Protein is usually monitored on this diet, with higher protein levels being desirable for weight loss.
